GRANITE BARRENS

Granite Barrens is a long-term project exploring the barren lands of Nova Scotia’s south shore. It is a unique landscape found only in select places on the Atlantic coast—most famously at Peggy’s Cove. The wind is ever-present on the barrens, its salty breath howling in your ear. Windless days are so rare they arrive with an almost supernatural presence. These calm days, or more likely hours, are when I choose to make photographs here. By taking away the wind, which is the granite barren’s dominant element, something unearthly is revealed. It's a world behind the looking glass where stones float and skies are stepped in.

I never expected this project to become a historical record, but after Hurricane Noel hit Nova Scotia’s south shore in November 2007 the granite barrens were forever changed. Huge boulders, many known to me as individual characters, were tossed about like marbles by giant waves. Many scenes in this series no longer exist. This series’ first image now lies under the tomb of a massive granite slab.

Prints from this series are available for purchase. Click on individual images above and you will see a link for complete purchase details.
