The Story Behind Dinosaurs Indoors

The Dinosaurs Indoors series began at the same time as the A Little Wild series, with a convergence of tricky circumstances. My daughter was a toddler at the time, and I was trying to balance her care with running a photography business. To bring these two life necessities closer together I set up a little table top studio for her to take pictures of her toys, while I made photographs for the Turning Leaves series nearby.

My daughter made toy dioramas with great abandon, often mixing up different genres of toys in a way my adult-mind found questionable. One day I noticed she was playing with a realistic Schleich plastic cow and some dollhouse furniture. The incongruity of the farmyard animal and Victorian-style dollhouse furniture sparked something in my mind, and I began making my own toy animal and dollhouse furniture dioramas to photograph. Soon after I added dinosaurs to the mix for some extra big-time drama.

It was great fun, and a great release to be working on a humorous project. The toy dioramas soon became more detailed, with wooden floors and custom-made wallpaper completing the lived-in house effect. I decorated my daughter's room with the finished prints, and before long decided to post the work online to see what the response would be. The rest is history, and since then toys have become a continuing theme in my professional work.
